FINAL PROJECT: STORYBOARD & POSTER DESIGN

AT 103/ Basic Design I
FALL 2011
FINAL PROJECT: STORYBOARD & POSTER DESIGN

Phase 1: HISTORY RESEARCH PROJECT

Research on the life and works of a significant painter, printmaker, drawer, graphic designer, photographer, architect, interior designer, animator, mixed media, digital artist, illustrator that you consider apply the studied elements and principles of design (line, color, space, form, shape, balance, rhythm, emphasis…) in his/her work from a very personal and distinctive approach.  Please refer to Contemporary artists’ list included below.

This research project will culminate in a visual presentation to share the research data with the class. Storyboards, posters and papers will be presented during the last class critique on your Exam date. PLEASE REMEMBER TO MARK THE DATE OF YOUR FINAL EXAM, wich is included in syllabus. ABSENCE WILL RESULT ON FAILING THE FINAL PROJECT (25% of your grade: 15% Project + 10% Paper + Sketchbook)

On this date, mounted Storyboards and Posters along with sketchbook will be presented individually during a class critique.  You will be evaluating each other. Along the presentation, students will hand in on that date, a 2 pages paper based on his/her artist research and creative process.

Oral Presentations and Papers should include:

Artist Selected:
·       Very brief biography of the artist as introduction (Maximum one paragraph)
·       You should look at and analyze as many works from the artist/ designer as possible. But you should select at least one artwork as inspiration/ foundation to develop your storyboard.
·       You will justify your criteria in the selection of the artist. In that you will discuss your interest on his/her/their particular use of the element of design studied.

Literary Source of your Narrative:
·       Song, book, poem, you have selected to base your visual narrative on.
·       Mention author, title and any relevant information about the work
·       Explain why you have chosen this piece.

Your approach:

·       How do you connect conceptually and aesthetically the work of the artist you selected with the literary source that inspire you?
·       Did this research and process help you to develop further your own visual language?

Phase 2: FINAL PROJECT: STORYBOARD

Based on your Art and Design History research, and the poem, song, book you have chosen, you will develop a storyboard for an animation/video.
Story must include characters ( For example: artist or designer you have chosen performs at the story you have chosen/ artists meet the characters in your literary source/ or one created based in their work)

Character/s:
The development of the character/s should be the first step in developing the narrative. Without characters there are no story. Think about figure and background. Your character will be the subject/figure, the background will be the context in which the narrative is developed.

Storyline:
The storyline will be based in the narrative of the source you have chosen: song, book, poem.
You can also be inspired by the work of artist selected, for example.

·       Highlights on the life and work of selected artist or designer
·       A story based on one specific artwork selected from the artist that meets conceptually or aesthetically the mood or tone of the song, book or poem you selected
·       A fictional or historic tale based in the evolution of the work of the visual artist and writers or musician you selected.

Storyboard:

STORYBOARD MUST CONTAIN AT LEAST 9 FRAMES.

You can use humor, suspense, etc. to deliver the message content.
Character designed and content delivered should be based in the application of elements and principles of design and concepts studied throughout the course. Your use (as well as the ones of the artist you selected) of elements and principles of design will be discussed in your presentation.  Remember that how you articulate the concept of your story, how you develop it aesthetically and present it to the class will be highly considered for your Final grade.

Any materials may be used, markers, pencils, ink, acrylic, tempera, watercolor, collage, as long as the whole storyboard is aesthetically consistent. You can also include collage of characters or other visual elements generated digitally. If you decide to do so, please discuss details of image generation and printing with instructor before doing so.

Final storyboards must be properly mounted on black mounting board for critique

About the Project
What is a storyboard?

A storyboard visually tells the story of an animation panel by panel, kind of like a comic book, a graphic novel. The first step is to understand what you are trying to communicate and what your intended message is.

Once you developed the characters and the storyline, your storyboard should convey some of the following information:

Who are the characters? How many characters are in the frame? How are they moving?
How the characters or elements in each frame dialogue with each other?

How much time has passed between the last frame of the storyboard and the current one? And next one?... Which is complete length you intend in the narrative?

Where the "camera" is in the scene? Is the “camera” moving close or faraway?
Remember the changing of the “ metaphorical camera” perspective makes the story more dynamic and engaging. If you draw your storyboard frames on separate papers you can rearrange them to move parts of the story around.

Interviews To Pixar Story Artists

You are encouraged to research further about storyboard artists and google Storyboard templates. You will find hundred of images that may be a good source for your presentation.

Phase 3:  POSTER DESIGN

Based on your storyboard, and applying once again the Elements and Principles of Design studied, you will design a poster that will advertise your Story (video, book, animation).
Posters will be painted (or/and collaged) on a 15”x 20” Illustration board.
I will discuss further details and possibilities on approaching this phase of the project individually with each student after storyboard was developed.
